Nikki Haley Surges Into Second Place in Iowa Poll
  + stars: | 2023-10-30 | by ( Susan Milligan | Oct. | At A.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +4 min
Nikki Haley is surging in support among Iowa Republicans and is now tied for second place in the battle for the GOP nomination in the Hawkeye State, according to a poll released Monday morning. Haley has the first-choice backing of 16% of Iowa Republicans – the same as Florida Gov. The poll was conducted before Trump's vice president, Mike Pence, dropped out of the race on Saturday, saying "this is not my time." Even before the realignment, Pence was struggling, having dropped from 6% support in August to 2% in the current poll. The Iowa poll reflects a new political reality for the 2024 elections, with the nominations for both major political parties appearing to be sewn up with two and a half months to go before the first nominating contest.

Rite Aid filed plans to close 154 stores on Monday as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Rite Aid is the smallest of the three major drugstore chains, well behind CVS and Walgreens. Rite Aid was expected to close stores as part of its bankruptcy. Rite Aid told Insider that it considers a variety of factors when deciding to close a store, "including business strategy, lease and rent considerations, local business conditions and viability, and store performance." "We will also strive to transfer associates to other Rite Aid locations where possible," the company said.

Each episode will focus on one of those states – the distracted brain, the frightened brain, the nourished brain, etc. And you’ll feel better the next day because our brain cells are having a chance to rest and regenerate and replenish,” she said. And we think that’s really important because a lower total brain volume is linked to certain diseases, earlier mortality and higher stress levels,” she said. Get some exerciseSleep and napping aren’t the only ways to give your brain a break. “It’s really important, again, to emphasize that these things are really individual, and it depends on the person,” she said.

The data comes from long-lost ice cores obtained during a secret army mission during the Cold War. Grabbing ice cores for scientists to study served as a perfect cover for their real intention, burying nuclear missiles within Greenland's ice sheet, in a scheme known as Project Iceworm. Along with the ice, scientists grabbed 12 feet of sediment that sat beneath the ice sheet. "The ancient frozen soil from beneath Greenland's ice sheet warns of trouble ahead," Bierman and co-author Tammy Rittenour wrote in The Conversation. Essentially, in the coming centuries, climate change will cause the Greenland ice sheet to melt completely, the researchers said.

Daytime naps may be good for our brains, study says
  + stars: | 2023-06-20 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —Taking daytime naps may help maintain brain health as we age, according to a new study. The results show “a small but significant increase in brain volume in people who have a genetic signature associated with taking daytime naps,” she told the Science Media Centre. “Even with those limitations, this study is interesting because it adds to the data indicating that sleep is important for brain health,” she said. MoMo Productions/Digital Vision/Getty ImagesHowever, such a technique can only show an association between nap and brain health, not cause and effect. The research sought to answer several questions about paternal participation in breastfeeding and the use of safe sleep practices for babies. And many could do more to support mothers who breastfeed, which can provide key health benefits for babies, the study indicated. The research also found racial disparities in sleep practices, with Black fathers less likely than White fathers to follow those practices. Overall, almost a third of the fathers involved in this survey did not receive enough or any advice about safe sleep practices, according to the study. Previous studies have suggested that fathers can play a key role in helping mothers breastfeed.

The managers said Gen Zers lack technological skills, effort, and motivation. It's so bad that 27% said they've fired a Gen Z employee within the first month. About 40% of that group said it's because people in this age group lack technological skills. The same proportion of managers also felt Gen Z employees — those born between 1997 and 2012 — lack motivation and get "easily distracted." The tensions between the generations are so bad that some managers who found Gen Z challenging to work with said they fired a Gen Zer promptly after hiring.
Nearly 75% of managers in a recent survey said Gen Z is more difficult to work with than other generations. About 12% and 16% of that group said they have fired a Gen Zer in their first week or month of work, respectively. She continued: "We know that with remote work and education, communication skills do not develop as well and people tend to work more independently. About 20% of these managers said they have fired a Gen Z worker in their first week of work and 27% within their first month. "GenZers could benefit from developing their communication skills to build stronger relationships with colleagues and client.

He speculated a lot of men burned out at work because of a fear of seeking help. Garfield's move was similar to the "quiet quitting" phenomenon sweeping the workforce, in which employees do the work they're paid for and no more. For these men, jobs aren't just a source of income; they're a source of social status, Wu found, something that's especially true for white men and younger men. "I think too many men don't want to say they are overloaded or have too much on their plate," Garfield said. "I think men have bigger egos and don't want to look weak, and unfortunately, companies use this to their advantage."

LOS ANGELES, March 9 (Reuters) - The following are select facts about the life and career of screen actor Robert Blake, who was acquitted in 2005 of murdering his wife but later found liable for her death in a civil trial:* Blake was about 6 years old when he started his Hollywood career. Before that, he and his brother and sister were part of an act known as "The Three Little Hillbillies" on the vaudeville circuit. Even though his earnings would provide most of his family's income, Blake said his father used him as "his punching bag." Can the Red Carpet Ever Be Fun Again?

Comedian Joan Rivers once ruled the red carpet with her colorful-yet-polarizing hosting style. When actor Andrew Garfield and YouTube comedian-turned-red carpet host Amelia Dimoldenberg engaged in sparkling repartee about astrological signs on this year’s Golden Globes red carpet, it exposed an urgent need: a nation famished for banter. How did we get to the great carpet-charm drought of 2023? Amid fear of sounding shallow or otherwise getting canceled during a live event tracked by social media, denizens of this Sunday’s Oscars may have long forgotten the red carpet’s onetime freewheeling magic.
LONDON, March 6 (Reuters) - From classic tuxedos to shiny jumpsuits, menswear has dazzled on the red carpets this awards season, sometimes even attracting the most attention with eye-catching looks. Singer Harry Styles arrived at the Grammy Awards in a chest-baring sparkling harlequin jumpsuit, while Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan has chosen ensembles in pale blue and red as his style choices for the Golden Globes and British Academy of Film (BAFTA) Awards. While classic suits and tuxedos are still a red carpet staple, menswear now features plenty of variety and bolder choices - vibrant colours, sparkling embroidery or detailing, as fashion favourite, actor Timothee Chalamet has often demonstrated with his non-traditional outfits. Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne has won style accolades for his red carpet choices this awards season, which culminates with Sunday's Oscars. Asked what she thought of men's fashion this award season, Oscar nominee Michelle Yeoh told Reuters last month: "I love it."
The Paradox of Prosecuting Domestic Terrorism
  + stars: | 2023-02-08 | by ( James Verini | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +52 min
The preventive approach to domestic terrorism goes back even further than the 1990s and it begins with the basic police work and surveillance of the joint terrorism task forces. In fact, there is no section of the U.S. Criminal Code that criminalizes domestic terrorism as such. The absence of clear law around domestic terrorism, and the imperatives of prevention, mean that investigators and prosecutors who work domestic terrorism cases must focus on more common charges: weapons violations, illegal drug possession, burglary, aiding and abetting and so forth. But this was not enough to overrule the fear of domestic terrorism that was gripping the nation and that hung in the courtroom. It reflected the legal paradoxes of the case and domestic terrorism law in general or, maybe more accurately, the absence of it.

Initial startup of a 250,000 barrels per day (bpd) crude distillation unit (CDU) at the 369,000 bpd refinery is expected by Jan. 31, the sources said, making the Beaumont refinery the second largest in the United States. SHALE OIL TO DIESELExxon had no immediate comment on the start up of the new processing unit, called the Beaumont Light Atmospheric Distillation Expansion (BLADE) project. BLADE, considered as early as 2014 and formally approved in 2019, was planned to process Exxon's crude oil pumped from the Permian shale field in West Texas and New Mexico. Operators at the Beaumont refinery this week were purging the new CDU of air in preparation to introduce its first crude, the people familiar with the matter said. POST-PANDEMIC MILESTONEExxon's Beaumont expansion marks a return to an era of steady refining capacity gains through processing tweaks and adding new equipment to existing plants.
